When you think of the Outer Banks, you probably imagine lighthouses, wild horses, and wide sandy beaches. But tucked away in Kill Devil Hills, just five minutes from the Wright Brothers National Memorial where the “First Flight” took place (sorry, Ohio, it really happened here in North Carolina), you will find one of the area’s most surprising treasures: OBX Winery: Where Wine and Warmth Meet in the Outer Banks. Owned and operated by Lorraine and Duncan MacRae, OBX Winery is the only winery located on the barrier islands of the Outer Banks. Since opening in 2013, the MacRaes have welcomed locals, vacationers, and wine lovers from around the world into their cozy tasting room. It feels more like visiting old friends than stepping into a traditional vineyard.

An OBX Micro-Winery With a Big Heart

From the outside, OBX Winery sits in a simple strip mall that could easily be mistaken for a dry cleaner or a sandwich shop. Step inside, however, and you are greeted with a warm space featuring two counters, ten chairs, and shelves lined with bottles made on-site. Behind the bar, rows of fermentation tanks stand ready for the next batch. Everything from fermenting to bottling to labeling happens right here in Kill Devil Hills.

Lorraine and Duncan, the proud owners of OBX Winery, share a warm smile.

Lorraine and Duncan source grape must from winemaking regions around the world and transform it into their own creations. Duncan describes OBX Winery as a “micro-winery” because every step is done by hand. They order the must, ferment it, bottle it, label it, and market it themselves. The result is a winery experience that is approachable, down-to-earth, and deeply connected to the people who walk through the door.

Sweet Wines for Sunny Days

OBX Winery has built its reputation on producing sweet, refreshing wines. Their specialty is ice wine, which is sometimes called “deck wine.” Lorraine explains, “Sweet wines are nicknamed deck wines because you can add ice and it will not dilute the flavor.” That makes them the perfect companion for summer afternoons on the porch or evenings overlooking the Atlantic.

The grapes for their ice wines come from Upstate New York and Canada, where they are harvested frozen to preserve their natural sweetness. The result is a wine that feels indulgent and refreshing at the same time. It fits perfectly with the easygoing, sun-soaked lifestyle of the Outer Banks.

A Gathering Place for Visitors and Locals

What OBX Winery may lack in size, it more than makes up for in personality. On any given day, you might find a quiet couple swapping wine stories or a group of bachelorette party guests filling the room with laughter. During the summer months, the small tasting room can host as many as 25 guests at once.

For Lorraine and Duncan, the winery is more than just a business. Lorraine puts it best when she says, “This place is just something to get up in the morning for. We meet people from a lot of places, and it gives us a sense of purpose.” That spirit shows in the way they welcome visitors and ensure that everyone leaves with a smile.

The OBX Winery Experience

Visiting OBX Winery is not about strolling through acres of vines. It is about intimacy, charm, and connection. The tasting room feels personal, filled with vintage touches that give it the warmth of a family gathering space. Guests often leave not only with a bottle of wine but also with new stories, laughter, and a memory that lingers long after vacation ends.

PS: On the very site where OBX Winery now stands, back in 1897, absolutely nothing happened. Today, it is where great wine and great stories take flight.
